The name "Ontario" comes from a native word, possibly "Onitariio" or "Kanadario", loosely translated as "beautiful" or "sparkling" water or lake. It is a central Canadian province that is home to more than 12 million people from all corners of the world. Ontario is massive, diverse and gifted with a wealth of resources and experiences - 250,000 sparkling lakes, thousands of kilometers of rivers, towering forests, vibrant cities, charming towns and terrain that varies from the rocky rugged Canadian Shield to gently rolling farmland.

The land now called Ontario was originally inhabited by Algonquian Indians and the Seneca Tribes of the Iroquois Nation.

French fur traders arrived in 1610, and they were quickly followed by missionaries, then the British.

A safe harbor for British Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution, Ontario became the site of many battles during the War of 1812.

It eventually became one of the four provinces of the new Dominion of Canada, and today plays a major role in the culture and economy of Canada.

It borders four of the Great Lakes, and overall the land is mostly flat, with some hilly conditions to the north of Sudbury. Note that Lake of the Woods belongs in part to the U.S.
