Grand State of Maine, proudly we sing
To tell your glories to the land
To shout your praises till the echoes ring
Should fate unkind send us to roam
The scent of the fragrant pines,
The tang of the salty sea will call us home.
Oh, Pine Tree State
Your woods, fields and hills
Your lakes, streams and rockbound coast
Will ever fill our hearts with thrills
And tho' we seek far and wide
Our search will be in vain
To find a fairer spot on earth
Than Maine! Maine! Maine!

The Coat Of Arms
Is placed on a blue field. In the center of the shield a moose rests under a tall pine tree. A farmer and seaman represents the work that people did in early times. The North Star represents the state motto:

CIVIL WAR PAGE
And welcome to Augusta, Maine: June 1865! On your right, lined up along State Street, is the 19th Maine Infantry, home at last from three years in the Army of the Potomac. On the balconies and porticoes of the famed hotel "The Augusta House" are various dignitaries including the Governor, the Adjutant General, the Mayor and their wives and guests. We don't know who the guy on the roof is. In the center is a little band of musicians who played for every regiment that left for the war out of Augusta; and for every regiment that returned here. Off in the distance you can see the dome of the original Capitol Building of the State of Maine. You can get right into this picture by clicking here.

Maine State Flower
White pine cone and tassel
Pinus strobus, linnaeus
White pine cone and tassel (Pinus strobus, linnaeus). Adopted by the Legislature of 1895. The White pine is considered to be the largest conifer in the northeastern United States. Leaves (needles) are soft, flexible and bluish-green to silver green in color and are regularly arranged in bundles of five. Needles are 2 1/2-5 inches long and are usually shed at the end of the second growing season. Flowers (strobili) occur on the tree. Cones are 4-8 inches in length, usually slightly curved. Cone scales are thin and never have prickles. Cones also have a fragrant gummy resin.
